Shall we resume normal programming? Thanks to a local business owner for alerting me to this one. New School Canteen on the corner of George and Argyle streets was a burger place that opened very late in the trend, just after the time that the previous aspirant Roadhouse closed.

New School Canteen started by offering healthy salad dishes and fancy muesli breakfasts alongside ridiculous stunt burgers – stereotypical women’s food and men’s food. Then they dropped the healthy stuff and the morning hours. Still no one came. It all looked so artificial and lasted only about six months.

Their social media has been silent for nearly a month, and although there’s no farewell post, I am calling this one – they are done. If you want a ridiculous burger in Fitzroy, you go to the Napier hotel for the bogan burger. Everyone knows this.

Nonetheless I think the space and the location have potential. Breakfast Thieves has made a success of a backstreet corner new development location, and there’s little to prevent the right kind of cafe or restaurant from making this space work.

Who shuts a new small business that is struggling to establish itself to go on holidays? If the owners are that deluded then of course they will fail! Successful business owners hire good staff to run their businesses so they are free to go on holiday while continuing to make money. That is obviously not happening here.

How does one have $300k for a fit out but not enough cash flow to ride out 6 months? This seems to be a common occurrence.

Perhaps they close their google listing so others don’t waste their time going there….

They should also ask certain ‘influencers’ to stop promoting it.
