About four years after Ol School fish and chips closed on St George’s Rd in North Fitzroy, the space has reopened as Aphro and Wolfe (Facebook and Instagram), a toastie cafe with the welcoming shabby chic feel of Fitzroy cafes of a decade ago, with mismatched 60s and 70s furniture and no pretensions.

I arrived feeling hungry and slightly delicate after a grand dinner the evening before at Añada on Gertrude St, where 5 delicious courses were served with matched wines from Scion of Rutherglen. The pours were generous. Roasted venison with chocolate and beetroot sauces goes so well with durif. But I digress…

Suffice it to say sustenance was required, preferably with melty cheese. My friend had the 3 cheese, which comes with tomato chutney, and I had the reuben, which has some tangy mustardy mayo on the side. The toasties are delicious and substantial.

I am partial to a reuben, and Aphro and Wolfe’s is easily better than the nearest alternative at North Fitzroy Social. It’s also better than the reuben at Eastern Block in Coburg, and similar in satisfaction to those at True North, also in Coburg, and Lady Melville in West Brunswick. The coffee is good too, and is made with Fitzroy’s St David milk.

I sometimes criticise food businesses for not being quite the right style of venue in quite the right place, or for not understanding or focusing on the local customer base. In this case, I think Aphro and Wolfe have got everything right in terms of offering, aesthetics and location and I think they will do really well. I plan on working my way through the menu…

The Reuben at Backstreet Eating is worth a mention too.

I’m glad to see it finally open – This place must have been three years in the making! It seemed all fitted out for such a long time and ready to go, but nothing happened.

I had the Reuben on a hangover and it was really good!

My go to for coffee as I live near by. The barista is normally there is very friendly and makes a good coffee. Toasties are always awesome, but they are huge so if you’re not too hungry I would split it with another person.
