Vincent the Dog is a cafe on Drummond St in Carlton that has been open for nearly two years. I’ve been vaguely aware of it but until recently hadn’t found an opportunity to visit. They don’t do online media. No website, Facebook or Twitter. It’s probably why they took so long to register in my mind.

I’m sometimes seduced by menu oddities (see bacon doughnuts) so the concept of Chinese doughnuts with melted cheese, pork floss, pickled vegetables and poached egg naturally appealed to my pre-caffeinated mind. Never mind the decoration – this is basically a toasted cheese sandwich with chilli sauce on the side.

The coffee is very good, the service is friendly and my companion enjoyed her startlingly bright green matcha latte. Vincent the Dog is good enough to compete with the nearby Cafe Lua and Campos, though for me Campos has the best coffee in this immediate area.

Good to know a cafe can be successful without the aid of social media.

It benefited from the usual Boredsheet advertorial when it was new, but doesn’t do its own ongoing online marketing.

Your meal looks like it was dropped on the plate from a great height!
