Shocolate cafe and chocolate shop has outgrown its small Johnston St location, according to its owner who I spoke to earlier this week, and will be reopening somewhere else soon. In the meantime he said they would continue to trade online (a similar message is on their Facebook page).

But when I tested their website yesterday, it was down. Their domain name registration had been altered the day before. It’s hard to trade online when you don’t have a website. Maybe it’s a temporary error, but I’m not sure what to believe. Other chocolate shops have come and gone in Fitzroy and, with the trend itself seemingly over, San Churro remains the sole survivor.

Update: 27 February: their website is live again.

Well this is depressing news to wake up to on a Friday morning… I regularly went there just for the chocolate spheres… hope they’re back up and running soon!

And the question remains, can San Churro survive? I don’t know a single local who has ever visited this suburban paradise – and I’m not convinced that the tourist numbers can support it, either. If they are still there in 12 months’ time, they will need deep pockets to keep chugging on.

Do you mean the big new version? It is obviously a big investment and a statement of confidence.

Yes, I mean the one on the old ‘Red Tongue’ corner. We’ll see … but then again, I thought Bimbos would fold in the first 6 months.
