The owners of the Rose St Market have undertaken an ambitious construction of a cafe and bar, the Young Bloods Diner, that makes impressive use of one side of their property. The upstairs bar is a great place to sit on a sunny afternoon with a cold beer, and the downstairs cafe does an excellent breakfast. I had the kedgeree and loved it – it is beautifully made. I particularly liked the pieces of crispy skin on top.

Young Bloods is buzzing on a weekend when the market is open but less so during the week when the market is closed. I’m sure people will soon learn that the nearby Grace and Industry Beans have a new competitor, but in the meantime the best time to try the food there is during the week.

Some of the best places in Fitzroy are hidden in the back streets. They are not obvious to the casual pedestrian walking along Smith or Brunswick streets, or crossing between them on Johnston or Gertrude streets, but they’re worth looking for. With three very enjoyable cafes – Young Bloods, Grace and Breakfast Thieves –  is Rose St Fitzroy’s best back street?

Damn that looks good! Wish they’d extend trading hours to include dinner service …
