It did not occur to me last week when I published a review of lunch at the Cutting Table on Smith St that I should announce a new series of lunch reviews. I’m currently working from a studio in Fitzroy and am eating out around Smith, Gertrude and Brunswick streets, so there will be a renewed focus on daytime food here for the forseeable future.
Last year I was working in St Kilda and wrote a series of southside lunch posts. It was most enjoyable overall to focus on a different area but it’s even better to have more time in Fitzroy and Collingwood. There’s banh mi and kebabs to compare and some new places to try.
Before I started this new series I’d enjoyed my first visit to Masak Masak on Smith St Collingwood and I’ve returned there because their $10 lunch specials are enticing on cold windy days. Le Cellier is still offering its outrageous mitraillette for only $13 on Brunswick St.
The piadina shop on Gertrude St is still doing great piadinas and their coffee is good too. The spanakopita from Melissa’s is always sublime.
Like a number of places, newish Japanese restaurant Pabu has a limited lunch menu and the more interesting dishes are only available in the evenings, as is the case at Yim Yam. For $10 or $12 you can get many different rice or soup dishes including unagi don, which was mostly good except for an over supply of peppery sauce. Next time I’ll try the ramen.
