In 2011 Chopsticks House on Brunswick St closed after a failed interior redesign where the dining space was painted electric blue. It was rebranded as Sizzling Saigon but that too closed by early 2012. It then reopened as Pho 369 and was given an indifferent review in May 2012 before closing again.

Whatever its name, it never seemed able to compete with the nearby Viet Rose. In the meantime, another Vietnamese restaurant called An Nam has opened on the same block, so competition has increased. It’s been closed for months with no sign of activity within, but in the past few days there have been signs of activity and new signage has just been erected. It’s now called Basil Leaf Pho La Que. Will it work this time or should the owners give up?

As near neighbours we felt obliged to give An Nam a go.

Suffice to say it was one of the worst dining experiences we’d ever had, suggesting that the kitchen staff were
    (a) not food industry professionals and
    (b) unfamiliar with the cuisine they were supposedly serving.

If they served that type of muck up in Bangkok they would have been thrown in the nearest khlong!

I’ve not entered because there seems to be no vibe, but it seems to be a reliable indicator of much more than the ambience. But they’re meant to be Vietnamese, not Thai.

While the name is Vietnamese, the menu has things like Pad Thai, which was one of the things we tried…

Basil Leaf Pho is actually good. Having lived / worked near 369 Brunswick st for years I’ve been to the several incarnations of bad asian restaurants to have popped up there and they’ve all been pretty bad. I ate Basil Leaf on saturday and the pho was very very good, good broth and fresh bits. The service fine and they were very keen to know if we enjoyed our soup. I say review it Brian.
