The Cape Lounge on the corner of Brunswick and Johnston streets wants to trade until 1am (currently 11pm) on Sunday nights. Nearby on Brunswick St, competing kebab shops Kings and Lamb are planning to provide outdoor seating until 4am and 5am. What do you think? Do you mind Brunswick St evolving towards becoming an all night or 24 hour entertainment strip?

Well … we live right on Brunswick Street and when we are coming home late at night it looks like a carnival …. I have memories of the desolation of Melbourne at night in the 1960s and 1970s …. and so thank God for Brunswick Street as she is!

Judging by what I often see when walking up Brunswick St to get my Babka fix on a Saturday morning, the name “Lamb on Brunswick” could not be more apt…

So what will change? Two of these venues are trading until 4AM every weekend, and people congregate on the street to eat and chit-chat. As far as I experience it, this does not pose problems beyond a reasonable level. Even if a third business would be allowed to trade during late hours, the total number of customers won’t increase given that all venues close by 3 AM.

Looks like the Stone Hotel has a development application in to stay open until 4am. Given the fact that they don’t seem to be able to pull a crowd anytime we’ve been past maybe they are hoping to zero in on the early morning market.

BTW, don’t know if the new platform is an improvement Brian. For one, it seems you can’t identify the author of posted comments, which makes it difficult to develop long running feuds with people one might disagree with.

Oops, that was an accidental removal – will re-instate that soon!
