In the past week I ate at another three places new to me with varying results. I enjoyed an excellent sandwich, with cold roast beef, cheese and coleslaw ($8.90), and good coffee at the Windsor Deli on Hornby St, and am likely to return. There’s a number of sandwiches on the menu and it’s away from the rush of Chapel St with a calm atmosphere.
The Railway hotel on Chapel St looks rather posh and has a very good lunch offer – $15 for a meal and a pot of tap beer or glass of house wine. I tried the fish and chips, which was good except the chips were not chips, but rectangular pieces of baked potato. I wanted chips, and felt cheated. Chip fail. Consequently I’m not in a hurry to return.
Finally, Hanoi Hannah (High St) is similar to Miss Chu in the CBD but smaller in space and menu, and frustratingly some of the menu is not available at lunch. Dishes that are available include bo la lot (fried beef mince wrapped in betel leaf, $8) and Vietnamese coleslaw with chicken ($10).
