Before Cafe Lua, the cafe on the corner of Elgin and Drummond streets in Carlton looked dingy and unappealing. It’s now bright, colourful and appealing. Having read Where’s the beef’s positive review, I was keen to try it. I ordered the corn hotcakes with bacon, tomato, avocado and poached egg. It’s a substantial meal and a delicious one, with the coriander pesto working particularly well with the bacon.

With the unfortunate closure of What about food cafe further west on Elgin St, Cafe Lua is a welcome addition to the area. The coffee is good, the service friendly and the cafe is spacious and comfortable.

Nice! I’m glad this place suited you too.

What About Food became 330 Briks last year and is closed again. There are hints that something else might pop up there this year. I hope there’s a business that will find success at 330 Cardigan St!

In the meantime, we have Cafe Lua. :-)

This seems to be one that will have to visited as the previous installment in this spot never grabbed me enought to drag myself inside. And I must ask – what was the coffee like?

The coffee is good, but not as good as Campos, which I think does outstanding coffee.

On top of that, they also seem to be promoting local artists, and it’s open on Sundays and public holidays when Campos is not…
