In 1895 the Phoenix Chemical Company was established on Napier St. I am not sure what function the building now serves, perhaps residential, but it is nestled in the Fitzroy Primary School precinct. The chariots have changed too…

As a child living in Napier Street directly across from the Town Hall and attending the George Street State School, I used to often call into this factory where my father used to work. Aside from manufacturing Vanilla Essence, they also ground spices such as nutmeg and pepper. I would sit on sacks of spices and have a cup of tea with my “Uncle Bill” during my lunch break.
The smells from the grinding mill and the vanilla beans used were magical.
