After 12 years on Brunswick St Douglas and Hope is to close as a physical shop and continue as an online business. Amor y Locura gave the same explanation recently. A few days ago Small Business Minister Nick Sherry said that he thought most bookshops would disappear within 5 years. He was widely criticised by the book and publishing industry and some critics pointed out that the issue of physical retail decline was not isolated to this industry.
This is true, but it is particularly so for products, like books and DVDs, that can either be easily browsed and explored online or sold in a digital format. You can’t try clothes on through the net and you can’t buy a digital wardrobe (yet), but the fact that these retailers of physical goods are closing and planning to continue online is nonetheless interesting and significant.
