The winner of the May 2011 ‘tell me where to go’ poll was the relatively newly renovated Rainbow hotel on Young St, and it won by 1 vote in the closest poll of the series to date. The Rainbow received 32 (out of 141) votes, with the Spanish Club on Johnston St just behind on 31 votes and the Korean restaurant Goshen on Smith St on 30 votes.
A quick read of the menu made me salivate for the wagyu burger with smoked cheddar cheese and onion relish, and it is superb – fat, juicy and with fantastic chips. It’s not the cheapest pub burger around at $21 but I think it’s worth it. While the previous kitchen at the Rainbow was serving excellent modern cuisine, it was perhaps not the best venue for it, and the current menu is more conventional pub fare.
The front bar has been completely remade by the new owners (the former owners of Lambs Go Bar) with the bar now on the back wall (below), which opens up the room and makes much better use of the space than before when the room was dominated by a central bar.
