Back in May the City of Yarra rejected a plan to build a public toilet on the corner of Brunswick St and Westgarth St because a nearby business, which is only open during weekday office hours, complained. Never mind the thousands of people visiting the area the rest of the time. I was very tempted to ask people to take a mass dump on their doorstep in protest.

A new site has been proposed, which I think is even better: the corner of Brunswick St and Victoria St (another of the streets with a wide footpath like Westgarth St). As a busier intersection closer to more shops and restaurants, this is an ideal location for a public toilet.

The council is asking for feedback on the proposal by COB Friday 17 December, and I’m asking for your help. I’d like you to complete the survey. I’d like to see a massive vote in favour of the idea. If you go out at night and leave a venue, then realise you need a toilet but can’t get back in, you’ll need this. If you like to shop leisurely on a Sunday afternoon, you’ll want this.

We need to counter the NIMBY fuckwits and their irrational opposition to public toilets. Access to safe clean toilet facilities is a reasonable expectation for all civilised people. The inability to find a toilet can cause acute distress and this can be easily fixed.

In it’s usual backwards way of doing things, the council has a PDF on its website it expects you to download, print out, complete by hand and post back to them. Fuck that! They just built a new website but apparently didn’t build a survey function into it. Retarded. I don’t think they actually want any feedback, which is why they make it as difficult as possible to achieve.

So instead of their ridiculous time wasting procedure, I’m making it quick and easy for you. I’ve extracted the questions from their form and presented them below. Copy and paste the text into an email, add your answers and email it to Jacki.Liu@yarracity.vic.gov.au. Then post a comment here saying you’ve completed the survey, because I’d like to know how many people care about this issue.

I don’t trust the council to accept email submissions unless it is obvious many have been sent to them and they are forced to publicly acknowledge this. You should be all done in two minutes. I thank you on behalf of all the people, locals and visitors, who will benefit.

The survey – do it now, or before COB Friday 17 December

1. Do you support Council’s proposal for a new public toilet in the Brunswick Street precinct?
Yes / No
Why / why not?

2. Do you think the toilet should be accessible 24 hours a day?
Yes / No
Why / why not?

3. Do you think the corner of Brunswick and Victoria streets is a suitable location for this toilet?
Yes / No
Why / why not?

Do I need to be a resident (rate-payer, voter, etc) of City of Yarra to submit a reply? I’d love to give my opinion, and while I visit the area frequently (and think a toilet is entirely necessary) I do live elsewhere…

You don’t have to be a local – they want feedback from visitors too. The Council site says ‘Council is seeking feedback on this proposed location from local residents, business operators and people who visit the area.’

I emailed them… I don’t think it will stop people urinating on my house in Fitzroy St but at least it would slow the tide a little!

Are people getting responses from their emails? Just wondering if it’s worth filling it out the dead tree way.

I don’t know yet if anyone is getting a response, but I don’t have time to send them a piece of paper. They should be making easy for the public to comment but they insist on doing the opposite.

And what a surprise, no response from Jacki at the City of Yarra by the close of business today to my question about why they didn’t have an online form or ask for responses by email. Useless. They have received at least 10 emails today judging by the comments here!

Done. Thanks. I’m firmly in the NIMBY camp on this issue. I’m sick of people taking dump in (or close to) my backyard.

The NIMBYs I refer to are those who complain about street urinating yet also complain about the construction of public toilets near their homes or businesses. You can’t have it both ways! The Firefighters Credit Union on Brunswick St complained about the proposed Westgarth location and they’re only open office hours – pathetic.
