MacRobertsonLand is a new book by author Jill Robertson and Melbourne publisher Arcade that documents the life of the entrepreneur MacPherson Robertson and his chocolate and confectionary empire, which was based in Fitzroy. Hundreds of people now live in his former factories and warehouses that have been converted into apartments. As Jill (no relation) pointed out in her talk at the fun book launch last Thursday evening, Robertson is surprisingly little known today.
Robertson sounds like the Richard Branson of his era, particularly because he had an eye for promotional stunts and seemed to have enjoyed his wealth far more than many wealthy people. The beautifully designed and well researched and written book is a modest $20 and is available in paperback and ebook versions from the publisher.
