Lazzat on Lygon St is a cheap lunch place popular with international students in Carlton. I chose a $7.50 plate with chilli chicken, eggplant sambal and beef rendang. Once I started eating it, I felt strange; my taste buds were confused.
Unlike an MSG overdose, where everything burns and I quickly get a migraine, at Lazzat my brain eventually worked out that everything was sweet. The chilli chicken was very sweet, as was the eggplant. Even the rendang was slightly sweet. Weird. Not bad, but not desirable either and not recommended. If you want good eggplant and rendang, go to Minang Nasi Padang on Pelham St instead.
When I got back to the office and did some research I was glad to discover I was not alone: Jess Ho and Sweet celebrations have already commented on the unusual sweetness of the food at Lazzat. Others, like Walk walk Melbourne, Urban Muslim, Sweetnov86 and Tasting palate don’t mind or haven’t noticed.
