I was accosted, almost berated really, by a friend the other night who demanded to know why I have not written anything about beautiful actresses recently. How appalling I thought, I must make redress immediately. My contribution to the ‘where my heart lies – 20 favourite actresses‘ meme was popular, so I thought I would follow a similar format to write a new post.

Given that I watch a lot of British television, I thought I would make it about some of the British actresses I enjoy watching. For the sake of pure indulgence and to amuse a select few, these are some of my favourite lesser known television actresses. Most have been in The Bill and / or Doctor Who, so their faces may be familiar.

I first saw Laura Fraser in Neverwhere (1996), and have enjoyed her performances in Casanova and the recent, somewhat intense, short series Talk to me.

Neve McIntosh was in a quirky show called Gormenghast (2000), then in The Hound of the Baskervilles, and had brief appearances in Doc Martin and The Ghost Squad.

Sarah Parish has appeared beside David Tenant in the moving film Recovery and the charming series Blackpool (2004), and starred in the popular series Cutting it and Mistresses.

I first saw Juliet Cowan in series 2 of This Life (1997) and in recent years she has appeared in Pulling and my favourites Skins and Shameless.

I have been obsessed with Gina Bellman since seeing her in Dennis Potter’s Blackeyes (1989). She was in the hilarious Coupling and more recently in Jekyll.

Zoe Tapper has starred in the recent series Survivors, Demons and Desperate Romantics, in which she is fantastic as the elegant Effie Gray.

Gentlemen may prefer blondes, but intellectuals prefer brunettes…
