For the rest of the week I’ll be posting reviews of some of the new small bars in Perth that I visited last month. I like cocktails, and my cocktail bar crawl companions were Kat and Jasper from VJZoo, who are regular and committed participants (for work and pleasure) in the Perth small bar scene. Our first rendezvous was at 399 bar on William St for the ‘Monday is Funday’ creative industry meetup (see Facebook group).
399 have a decent wine and beer list, but no cocktail list because you tell them what you like and they make you something special each time. I asked for something bitter with orange and received this fabulous cocktail (above).
The bar is long and quite narrow, with the bar on one side and booths on the other. While the drinks are most excellent, the food is mediocre. Tapas style ‘small eats’ are $6.50 each or 3 for $18. A friend and I ordered after one another and they sent out the food with one of my three dishes on my friend’s plate and vice versa. Good thing we were at the same table.
The potato croquettes with tandoori chicken were lukewarm and had no flavour, but the lamb kofte were reasonable (above). The salmon on sweet potato mash (below) was very fresh but the mash was tasteless and needed salt.
399 has the best vibe of the four new small bars I visited in Perth, and was previously positively reviewed by Abstract gourmet. I highly recommend it as a place to visit for a drink and a conversation with friends. But it could be better if they got rid of the food and focused on what they do best: fabulous customised cocktails and friendly customer service.
