While on holiday in Perth I was a good son and took my Mum out to lunch. Based on positive reviews from the Melbourne coffee review, Palace foods and Bowl of honey, I chose somewhere she had not heard of and I had never been: the West End Deli on Carr St, West Perth. This review was a pleasure to write because lunch at West End Deli was the outstanding eating out experience of my visit to Perth this year. It’s very very good.
The menu contains a balance of breakfast and lunch dishes, and we chose the potted salmon with poached egg and fennel and ruby grapefruit salad (above), and the gnocchi with salted cod and broad beans (below). The latter was excellent, but the potted salmon was the truly wondrous dish.
The coffee is excellent, better than anything in nearby Leederville, and the atmosphere inside is light, airy and relaxing.
Located in a corner shop that was originally a butcher’s shop in the 1940s, which Mum remembers visiting as a child, West End Deli could be compared to Min Lokal in Fitzroy in terms of its quiet back street location, excellent coffee, smart menu and comfortable interior.
