According to the City of Yarra’s very useful searchable planning application information, two new cafes will open soon on the east end of Johnston St. I reported back in August on an application made for the building at 256 Johnston St (the former 5 star industrial laundry), and this has now been approved.
Nearby, the much protested about building at 222 Johnston St (above) has just been approved to house a daytime cafe on the ground floor. There was one there a few years back that failed, and the building itself seems to be cursed, as tenant after tenant has failed there. It’s no wonder really as its cold grey exterior is completely uninviting and sterile. Perhaps the architect who designed it should be forced to live in it?
With the new Tandoori Station opening in the renovated shell of the previously burned out Guru da Dhaba and the former Sukhothai building empty and presumably waiting for another food business to open there, the east end of Johnston St will experience a lot of change in the coming months.
