On a recent Friday night I came home after seeing the last of the films I selected from the French Film Festival program at the Westgarth cinema and wanted something sweet with my coffee, but the cupboard was bare, so I went out. It’s surprisingly hard to find cake late at night on Brunswick St. I got as far south as Cafe Nova and thought that would do. It’s far from my favourite Brunswick St cafe and it’s been years since I was last inside (probably the last time I needed cake at midnight).
The lemon curd tart is divine and the coffee good and strong but at $13.20 I was shocked. $10 for a piece of cake? I could have got a massive freshly made kebab for that! What’s the going rate for cake these days? At this price it will probably be several years more before I venture into Cafe Nova again.
