New Fitzroy gallery Unpretentiously Underground held its second exhibition opening on Sunday 1 February. It’s their first solo exhibition and it features the work of Lily Mae Martin (MySpace and blog), who I was fortunate to meet at the show. She produces work in a variety of styles from traditional portraiture to caricatures of friends. My favourite work in the show is the portrait of a crouching figure (in the photo below on the top right hand corner of the back wall). You can see this portrait here and more of the caricatures here. The show is on throughout February.
Like Gorker, Unpretentiously Underground holds great openings that become social events, with free beers and a fantastic courtyard area to hang out in. Rather than spilling out to a hot and sunny street like at Gorker, at UU you have lots of shady courtyard to relax in and participate in a parade of Fitzroy art lovers.
