Unpretentiously Underground is a new Fitzroy gallery co-located with a hair studio at Studio 7A, rear 238 Brunswick St, Fitzroy (enter via the laneway off Greeves St behind the Black Cat). I dropped in recently, met co-owner Mel Balkan and spoke with her about the space and the owners’ plans (it is co-owned by the owners of 696 Gallery on Sydney Rd in Brunswick). The space has wonderful natural light and a diverse opening exhibition that runs until the end of the month.
The debut exhibition opened on 4 January. The next, an exhibition by Lily Mae Martin, opens on 1 February, and future exhibition openings will follow this pattern and be on the first Sunday of the month throughout 2009.
Fortunately for art lovers the galleries in Fitzroy are mostly playing nice with each other and not trying too hard to compete with each other for opening dates. BSG openings are on Friday nights (weekly). Gorker openings are Thursday nights. Lamington Drive openings are Friday nights (monthly). By opening on Sunday nights, UU has found a niche that should serve it well.
This is how to get there if you are confused. Walk east on Greeves St from Brunswick St (past the Black Cat bar). Turn right into the laneway behind the building. Enter the door on your right. Walk around to your left then straight ahead to the end.
