Apart from seeing family and friends I didn’t do much in Perth on my recent trip there. I went to the beach every day and enjoyed perfect body surfing swells at City Beach every morning. After a long swim one day I went to Milkd cafe on Angove St, North Perth, for breakfast. The verdict? Acceptable but nothing special.

Milkd make a very good coffee but only average eggs. My plain scrambled eggs on toast was $11, which is expensive in comparison to Melbourne, where this would usually be under $10, or would have something decorative and flavoursome on the side for the price.

I’d go back for the coffee if I was local, and maybe this is not their breakfast specialty. I was feeling relaxed when I was there so I’m being slightly generous. As I noted in my review of Blake’s cafe (also in North Perth), food in Perth seems expensive compared to Melbourne.

I spent twenty years in Perth cafes (and still do when I visit family) and they can’t hold a candle to Melbourne. We really do have it good for great, and affordable food and coffee – not to mention decor and ambience. Fitzroy Forever.

It was only after arriving in Melbourne after living nearly thirty years in Perth that I realised how good Cafe 130 on Oxford St Leederville was – as good as some in Melbourne. It used to be my local – I spent so many hours there! But generally speaking, Perth cafes just don’t have the vibe, the service or the style of those in Melbourne.

Oh, I love Cafe 130! I still go there whenever I’m in town but alas, it’s not what it was.

If you’re from Perth too, we either know each other or have mutual friends, you know :)
