On 4 December before seeing Ross Noble at A mic in hand I went to the latest exhibition opening at Gorker gallery. The show is called Soft and Shiny by Drewfunk, who I briefly met at the Napier studio opening night at CCP. His work is painted on pine boards and the walls are decorated with a bamboo forest motif.
The characters in Drewfunk’s work are various creatures including rather adorable turtles, fish, monk-like figures and several Australian animals like koalas, cockatoos and kookaburras. Somewhat like Ghostpatrol’s childlike characters that are seen behind wolf masks and costumes, some of the characters in Drewfunk’s work reveal pink human-like faces underneath koala and kookaburra masks. The example below is my favourite work in the show, which runs until 21 December.
