In 2006 I walked past the former Dare Gallery furniture shop at 424-428 Brunswick St and was excited to read a planning permit application in the window stating that the property may be developed into a supermarket. So far nothing has happened. I checked the very useful Yarra Council planning permit search form recently and yes, plan PL06/0642 was approved back in February 2007. Nothing has happened, and I want it now!
Goodfellows across the road is useless, Piedimonte‘s is great but can be comparatively expensive for some products (although very cheap for others), and Safeway in Smith St Fitzroy and Lygon St in Carlton are clones with limited options for my ecclectic tastes. A new alternative would be keenly welcomed in Fitzroy.
According to the Abbotsford Blog and also the Victorian Government Department of Infrastructure’s Fitzroy: Suburbs in History note (24kb PDF), “Fitzroy is the most densely settled suburb in Melbourne at more than 6,000 persons per square kilometre. Fitzroy also has a high proportion of households without a car (32%).” Such a suburb is ideally suited to supporting another supermarket. Bring it on!
