Yesterday I went to Phillip Island to watch the Australian round of the World Superbike Championship. The series features many ex MotoGP riders, including two Australian former World Superbike champions – Troy Bayliss and Troy Corser. The round was billed as ‘The battle of Troy’. Very cool. I’ve been to the MotoGP race at Phillip Island three times now but this was my first WSBK experience. I will be back. It was a magical day. Race 1 was won by Bayliss on his Ducati and I watched from MG corner.
Race 2 was won by James Toseland on a Honda. I watched from the start-finish straight opposite the podium. I was well placed once the race finished to join the crowd in jumping the fence, jumping down the embankment, running across the track and positioning myself to watch the presentations.
I wasn’t quite close enough to get champagne sprayed in my face but it is brilliant to see the riders celebrating on the podium.
