Based on the demise of its Facebook and Instagram profiles, it seems Casa Ciuccio on Gertrude St has closed. I enjoyed a fantastic dinner there (but did not write about it) and also liked the cafe for lunch, as well as the cafe’s predecessor.  A job ad reveals that the owners who took over Ciuccio are now redeveloping the site as a new place called Basta.

This isn’t a huge surprise. When it changed hands the new owners immediately jacked up the price of the best thing on the menu- the grilled octopus- and then took it off completely. I don’t know what their business plan was about.

Basta- interesting to know what that will be about. ‘Basta’ means ‘enough’ in Italian, so I’m thinking a low end -all-you-can-eat pasta place.

Wrong guess Peter! Basta is all about authentic Italian flavours, handmade pasta and locally sourced ingredients. Not too little, not too much, Enough.
Come around we’ll can give you the recipe for that octopus dish that you like, or try the other restaurant of previous owners, I am sure they have that on the menu’.
Unfortunately it was the old Head Chefs dish and eventually we had to let that go to make room to our dishes.

    HI Fitzroyalty,

Yes we closed Casa Ciuccio at the start of April to make way for Basta which reopened the 3rd week of April. We are a little Osteria that specialises in handmade pasta that is all prepared in house by our New Head Chef. We thought it was time to move from on from Casa Ciuccio as we are quite passionate about Italian food and thought there was a place for it in this lovely suburb.

You may have noticed that we changed the name of the cafe and wine store next door also to “The Donkey”. Why you may ask? Our regulars had nicknamed us The Donkey as no one could pronounce Ciuccio correctly – so we rolled with it.

Would be great for you to come around and try us out.

    Best Regards

Basta and The Donkey Wine Store Management

Good luck, but it looks like a very limited menu. And there are already several other Italian restaurants in Fitzroy, including the excellent Ladro and Mr Ottorino. It doesn’t have any reviews yet on Zomato. It will be interesting to see if it last 12 months.
