This is more like it. Noi Thai restaurant, which was in Richmond for many years, is relocating to Smith St in the space of the idiotic Prego Amico, which lasted less than a year. This is a better fit for the precinct and a reversal of the decline in the number of Thai restaurants in Fitzroy, with the closure of Vilom and Inter on Smith St in recent years.

Ziamese on Brunswick St closed last year and Thai Thani looks closed right now but, according to their website, they are rebranding and relaunching as a hawker street food style restaurant, again very contemporary and likely to be more competitive and attractive.

Does that leave Patee Thai as the last remaining daggy old school Thai restaurant in Fitroy? Not quite. According to the list of restaurants in my 2009 post asking people to nominate their favourite Thai place in Fitzroy, it is the only one on the list still open. But I don’t know when the tiny N and J Thai on Smith St opened. Buubbub is newer, but has been open for five years now, which almost makes it a veteran.

I’m a bit concerned by the signage that refers to ‘southeast asian modern’. That can sometimes be an indicator of lack of focus and authenticity. Lets see how they go.
