I loved the original Miss Katie’s Crab Shack in North Melbourne, but the Rochester Castle version on Johnston St seemed overpriced to me. It lasted about a year there before moving on to the Ding Dong lounge in the city and a recently ended residency at the Alehouse in East Brunswick.
After reverting to be a generic pub back in June the Rochester has presented a good menu and a great atmosphere. It stands up well against quality food offerings from the nearby Town Hall and the Marquis of Lorne hotels. No more disgusting toilets and cheap parmas, the Rochester is now a great place to spend time with friends.
All that money and effort in restoring it inside and out has hopefully been worth it. Separate to the Crab Shack issue, the renewal of the Rochy has been an overlooked story this year, and I thought it worthy of mention.
