I seemed to be the only person who liked the very short-lived Levantine incarnation of Karavan cafe on Gertrude St near the corner of Smith St. It lost its unique point of difference before most people noticed that it had opened, and became a generic cafe that was never popular. Now the space is to become a Japanese cafe / restaurant. This could be good.

I recently criticised the new Prego Amico on Smith St for not being on trend (and thus having doubtful appeal) but this is resolutely on trend. Whether it is good is another matter, but I’ll give it a go when it opens (which is something I can’t promise for Prego Amico).
