A range of painted slogans about sex and gender politics have appeared in recent days around some Fitzroy streets. This is in the laneway opposite the end of Exhibition St off Young St.

How about the poster respect all women who happen to own apartments in the Max apartment block, and who have to pay to have their deep insights painted over?

Quite. This kind of naive posturing achieves no political outcome.

At least this has a semblance of intelligence/humour (maybe). Far worse is the explosion in mindless tagging that’s taken over Fitzroy and Collingwood in the last couple of months. And very little of it seems to be being cleaned away by the council – see the upper storey of most shops on Brunswick Street for instance, or the window of 7-11 at the Johnston Street corner. Mindless, stupid, ugly and self-reproducing.

Upper storeys on building would not be touched by the council graffiti cleaners for accessibility and occupational health and safety reasons.

These messages have been mostly legitimate in meaning; the issue of not assuming gender is important for androgynous, intersex and trans people in particular.
