The northern end of the Brunswick St strip is stubbornly resistant to gentrification. Palookaville has been struggling along for some time, and recently introduced a $20 three course vegan menu, which is interesting for a venue that was better known for generic pub food. But it was too late. Their Facebook hasn’t been updated for more than a month and, unlike Meatballs and Sons, there’s no closure post.

Looks like Palookaville will soon reopen as something called Bontempo Pizzeria. Their Facebook page is abuzz with renovation updates. Seems a considerable remodelling of the space. It’s promising. I hope they activate that end of Brunswick Street. However, they’ve provided their own nickname, being #thebont, which makes me a little uneasy as it sounds like aural flypaper for people who live in Richmond and who wear t-shirts decorated with large numbers. Let’s hope they’re not that sophisticated at social engineering.
