Another of the food trends in Melbourne in the last couple of years has been ramen. Ramen Ya in the CBD was a prominent opening, as was Shop Ramen on Smith St recently. Now there’s Dojo Ramen Bar on High St Northcote, which has been open for a couple of weeks. I tried the ramen, gyoza and JFC (Japanese fried chicken, AKA kara age) with a friend and we enjoyed it. The inside seems noisy but the rear beer garden is breezy and spacious and not overly crowded with tables.
There’s some good South Australian and Victorian wines available by the glass on their list including a grüner veltliner and a dolcetto, both of which I tried. The dolcetto in particular was a great match with the shio (salt) broth. The food was in my opinion no better or worse than other similar offerings in inner Melbourne, but I like the atmosphere and the location, which makes it a great place to spend time with friends.
