Yong green food on Brunswick St was the winner of my third ‘tell me where to go’ poll. It received 31% of the total vote (43 of the 139 votes, 3 less than last month). I was surprised that it won considering it has been open for about six months and has been well reviewed by established and newer food blogs. I thought people would already know about it and would not be that interested in another review, especially as I am hardly a vegetarian food expert. My enthusiasm for food in general will have to suffice.
I arranged a rendezvous with a healthy eating friend who I had also introduced to the former business in this building (Happy Kappa) and we perused the considerable menu. We decided on the chickpea korma and the Japanese curry. The former comes with rice, a dollop of beetroot and cashew dip and green salad (above). The latter comes in a bowl with rice (below). Both are delicious and substantial meals at very reasonable prices (about $12.50 each).
I really like the food at Yong and recommend it. When I was there for Saturday lunch it was mostly full and business seems to be good. Yong appears capable of doing much more than taking the inevitable overflow from the nearby Vegie Bar – it is earning its own loyal customers due to the quality of its food.
I suggest you make up your own minds by trying it soon, and by reading the reviews by Skinny chic, Vegan about town, New perestroika, Where’s the beef, Vegie noob, Vegematarian and In the mood for noodles. I liked Happy Kappa but Yong is better and I hope it prospers.
