I have no idea. I’ve eaten at some of the Thai restaurants in Fitzroy in the past but none recently, and I’m unlikely to try them all in order to review them and choose a winner. I can’t even find an online review of each. So I thought I would try asking for opinions from readers. Comments please on these Fitzroy Thai restaurants:

Vilom Thai, 357 Smith St

Sala Thai, 266 Brunswick St

Red Chilli, 223 Brunswick St

Sukhothai, 234 Johnston St (closed September 2009)

Patee Thai, 371-373 Brunswick St

Thai Thani, 293 Brunswick St

Good job! I once had a dream of trying the crab fried rice at all the Thai restaurants in Northern Virginia. I did not fulfill my dream. But it was fun trying.

My vote is for Sala Thai, because the food is about as simple and cheap as I can imagine, and the room is friendly and fun.

    Vilom Thai!

Bob has been looking after us for several years.

I recommend the red duck curry.

    Support the little guys!

The gado gado at Sala Thai is excellent

(steamed veg on rice, topped with a fried egg, and satay sauce on the side)

Can I say Thaila Thai – Lygon St, Brunswick East or does that not count?
It is really good value and they use nice chicken which is rare at a lot of Thai places…. Oh and the tofu is good too!

Yeah and Thaila Thai has been some of the worst Thai I have had. Bland with terrible ingredients. I don’t understand why it’s always so busy.

I’ve been to Thaila Thai once – food was revolting and everyone in my group ended up with food poisoning. I can’t understand why people seem to love it. On Brunswick St Patee Thai is the best I’ve tried.

Patee Thai got a ‘not’ rating from Mel: Hot or Not, so it seems Sala wins with three positive comments and no negative ones.

Absolutely I agree that Sala Thai in Brunswick st is the best one in the town, good food and good service….coming between 5:00pm to 7:00pm they would offer the happy hours for the beer and wines $3.00 for a glass of wine $4.70 for a bottle of beer, a great deal for drinking and eating Thai food.
the owner has a passion on cooking, they are now opening on Lunch time from 11am to 2pm with a range of pakage : meal, rice, fruit and a choice of dessert. I love it, it so great for the busy lunch time.
I also love the pakage on evening time for week days, $11 for meal and rice
